In deer hunting, many hunters will have a day when they’re going to be let down by the quality of their riflescope. It happened to me when I was younger. Now that I’m older I’ve heard these same comments time and time again from other people, “I just couldn’t see him.”, “My scope was fogged up…”, “It was late, and the buck was in the shadows.” Sound familiar?
The next comment is almost always… “I knew I needed a better scope, but I wanted to save a few dollars and thought this one looked good when I looked through it while I was inside the store. In most cases, the buck that got away because you couldn’t see it could have been avoided with a better riflescope.
When it comes to shopping for riflescopes, this is one of those times you need to spend more on and not less. Far too many of us go grab a rifle, throw a cheap scope on there, and don’t pay attention to the scope mounts, the quality of the lens, how well the scope is built or how it’s going to perform in low light situations. This can all be avoided if you will take a bit of time and think about the next few paragraphs and keep in mind the following:
– The clarity and ability to gather light in low light and rainy situations
– How fast can you acquire the target through the scope
– What crosshair pattern fits your style
RIFLESCOPE CLARITY & LIGHT GATHERING
Hunt with confidence at extended range with the Trijicon Huron® 3-12×40 riflescope
The clarity factor when it comes to optics is such a big deal. During low light situations, what is happening a lot when you’re hunting is that light is not your friend. Since deer tend to move at dawn and dusk, or in really bad rainy/nasty conditions, it’s not going to be sunny and bright outside. So because of that, the light gathering capability of a riflescope is something that is a huge factor between different brands. When you go into your local Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s, and lift a riflescope up to take a look at all the great mounts on the wall (that are in a well-lit building) of course almost all scopes are going to look good! But when you can get outside at dawn or dusk and in different lighting conditions, those riflescopes that were crystal clear and bright in the store are not going to look the same. Therefore you’ve got to take them out in the field and test them (and then return it if you’re not satisfied) or do a lot of research on which ones will perform in those situations.
When you look at the Trijicon lineup of optics from top to bottom, the quality of their optics is something that’s going to be high in quality and built tough. Trijicon’s products like their riflescopes can last in the field in all elements whether it’s snow, high heat, low light, and rough conditions, and even those times where you might be banging your gear around. The components, the clarity, and the elements in Trijicon’s multi-coated lenses are going to make a big difference when it comes to those first five or last five minutes of light when you’re out there trying to identify the target to put the crosshairs where it matters.
FAST ACQUISITION OF YOUR TARGET
Wade knocked down this Texas Hill Country buck with his T/C Compass II and Trijicon Huron Setup
I’d like to share my thoughts on something that’s not talked about enough, and that’s rapid target acquisition. Many new hunters will crank up their scope’s magnification far too much and in turn, cannot find the vitals and hold the crosshairs on them consistently. This is where understanding your scope’s magnification and when to adjust the magnification in different hunting situations is key.
Having that ability is something that Trijicon really takes a lot of pride in. If you grab some scopes, it’s kind of a battle to adjust them. You can feel the movements are tough and jerky. I suggest you try something like the Trijicon Huron scope lineup that Trijicon has designed for whitetail hunters. It has the magnifications in three different choices to help you as well as having that smooth adjustment between magnification ranges on each model.
The BDC Hunter Holds reticle found on the Huron Riflescope will get you on target quickly and accommodates the most popular hunting cartridges.
There are a lot of options when it comes to crosshairs in today’s world for rifle scopes, to the point where it can almost be overwhelming. Trijicon is a leader in giving you a multitude of options when it comes to finding the crosshair pattern that you’re the most confident in. Me personally, I’m a traditionalist. I go back to when I was learning how to shoot an old BB gun with a cheap 3×9 scope and that’s what I’ve trained my eye on. Now some incredible things are built into a lot of these new scopes right now to give you better aiming points, but I like a traditional look. Other people may like something totally different and that’s what’s cool about the Huron riflescope lineup, there are so many options within that lineup designed to help whitetail hunters find that crosshair that they personally are going to like the most.
So when you start looking at different options out there for riflescopes, the Trijicon Huron riflescope whitetail lineup exists because it’s going to allow you to find what fits you. Are you a guy hunting in the thick woods? Are you hunting out West? Are you hunting off the side of a mountain? In a box blind? Regardless of where you are hunting, you want to take the information from this article, understand it, and use that data to make the best choice possible when it comes to your scope.
You can really start a lot of interesting debates on social media, around the campfire, outdoor forums, wherever it may be about the 6.5 Creedmoor. There’s a very love it or hate it type feeling about this cartridge. But to me, when you pair the 6.5 Creedmoor with the right ammo and the right situation, it’s a deadly combination.
Just like most of the calibers out there, if you use the right bullets in the right conditions, you’re going to find success with it. So those people that don’t like 6.5 Creedmoor a lot of times (I think probably more often than not) they’re using the wrong bullet when it comes to bullet selection.
Do Your Research!
I recommend to a lot of people, that if you’ve got a rifle and want to know what ammo performs the best with your rifle, grab four or five different boxes of ammo (with four or five different bullet weights) from different companies, and go shoot it. At the end of the day, I think what you’ll find is which bullet your rifle performs best with. When you do that and spend the time on the range, it’s going to make you a better shooter and hunter, because you understand and now know what your gun is going to do. I think that pays off a lot.
When you look at the 6.5 Creedmoor, there are a tremendous amount of bullets available that are designed for long-range target shooting out there. There are probably fewer bullets designed for that cartridge when it comes to hunting. But there are some really good bullets out there that I advocate using that we’ve found and used in the field with tremendous success.
Just like any cartridge, any round, anything out there, there are limitations. The 6.5 Creedmoor (shooting the right ammo), I think it’s perfect for a lot of your light, thin-skinned big game animals like African antelope, whitetail deer, etc. It’s going to be right at the lower end of cartridges I would probably pick for elk but I mean, we’ve seen it in action on elk hunts before in which it performed flawlessly and knocked them down. But once again, I think it’s just kind of right there at that threshold.
Which Brand of 6.5 Creedmoor We Chose
So when it came time for me to kind of settle on a bullet that I liked we shot a lot of different ones, I read a lot, looked at a lot of different things, and that Hornady 143 grain ELD-X round really seemed to be the one that we got the best results out of it. I mean, we began to get immediate knockdowns, animals dropping right there. It performed in the African forest very well and a lot of our hunts that we were doing over there. I mean, it was one shot, one kill type round. However, when you talk to a lot of professional hunters, they’re going to talk about the 6.5 Creedmoor is maybe not good enough for wildebeest and animals like that. But I have seen it knock down a wildebeest (it took a couple shots) and do its job and wildebeest are notorious for taking multiple rounds in those types of hunting situations. So you just got to study, learn, and make those decisions for yourself personally, for where you’re hunting, and the situation that you’re dealing with. Ultimately you got to put that bullet where it matters, to find the ultimate success.
I think in the end, the 6.5 Creedmoor is an excellent whitetail deer hunting round. I think if you’re making good shots and you’re using the right kind of bullets, you’re really going to be pleased with it. I also think it’s a phenomenal long-range target shooting rifle. I think it’s far better than a .308 Winchester based on the data and based on the things that I’ve seen out there. So when I look at the 6.5 Creedmoor, the haters are gonna hate. But I promise you when you’ve seen it in action on quite a few of our hunts out there it is flat out hammering them (the deer) when we put the bullet where we’re supposed to.

Program Supports Efforts Protecting Access to Land for Outdoor Recreation Across U.S.
Yamaha Motor Corp., USA, announces funding for the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative (OAI) grant program’s third quarter, supplying essential resources to local and national outdoor recreation and land stewardship organizations working to create and protect access to public land for outdoor recreation.
“Enjoying the outdoors has become a primary source of entertainment and recreation for many this year, with some public lands seeing record traffic from enthusiasts,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s Motorsports marketing manager. “The Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative is the leading resource for land managers to help ensure trails and facilities are appropriately preserved and new opportunities are created to meet these rising demands.”
WOLVERINE RMAX4 1000 LIMITED EDITION
The third quarter 2020 Yamaha OAI grants, totaling more than $83,000, were awarded to the following organizations:
Joshua Tree National Park – Twentynine Palms, CA
Lawron Trail Riders – Bovey, MN
Sportsmen for Fish & Wildlife – Marriott-Slaterville, UT
Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation – Halifax, VA
“These dealer-approved projects will provide a range of support for Yamaha customers and riding enthusiasts from staging area shading and educational structures at Joshua Tree National Park, to snowmobile and OHV bridges on a trail system near Duluth, Minnesota,” Nessl said. “Some of these projects are part of larger improvement programs, and others are standalone efforts that wouldn’t happen without the support provided by the Yamaha OAI grant program. It’s important and necessary work, and we proudly align with our dealer network to make a real, positive impact on our customers’ outdoor experiences and opportunities.”
For more than 10 years now, Yamaha has been issuing quarterly grants to non-profit organizations supporting the program’s mission. Yamaha has funded more than $250,000 in grants this year, and over the life of the program, Yamaha has contributed more than $4.5 million in aid to more than 380 projects across the nation. Yamaha’s OAI-supported efforts work to improve access to public land for outdoor activities including riding, hiking, biking, camping, hunting, fishing, and motorized recreation.
The deadline for submission to the 4th quarter 2020 funding cycle for the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative is December 15, 2020 – applications must be postmarked by that date. About the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative
For more than a decade, the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative has led the Powersports industry in guaranteeing responsible access to our nation’s land for outdoor enthusiasts. Through this program, Yamaha has directly and indirectly supported thousands of miles of motorized recreation trails, maintained and rehabilitated riding and hunting areas, improved staging areas, supplied agricultural organizations with essential OHV safety education, built bridges over fish-bearing streams and partnered with local outdoor enthusiast communities across the country to improve access to public lands. Each quarter, Yamaha accepts applications from nonprofit or tax-exempt organizations including OHV riding clubs and associations, national, state and local public land use agencies, outdoor enthusiast associations and land conservation groups with an interest in protecting, improving, expanding and/or maintaining access for safe, responsible and sustainable public use. A committee then reviews each application and awards grants to deserving projects. Examples of appropriate projects for grants include, but are not limited to:
Trail development, restoration and maintenance
Trail signage and map production
Staging area construction, renovation and maintenance
Land stewardship, safety and education

“The Vapor is the most accurate crossbow I have ever shot,” said Rick Bednar, TenPoint CEO. “In teaming with Garmin, it takes our commitment to building the most accurate high-end crossbows to a new level of technological achievement.
The NEW Garmin Xero® X1i crossbow scope with built-in laser range finder is the first of its kind. This auto-ranging digital scope with 3.5X magnification automatically measures distance to a target. A single button press lets you range game up to 250 yards away and reflective targets up to 500 yards away.
Precise illuminated aim points automatically adjust for both distance and brightness conditions to allow you to see your target, unobstructed by reticle patterns. The days of “gap shooting” with multiple aim points are gone, you need merely to range the target by way of the built-in touchpad on the grip and use the single aiming solution provided by the Xero X1i.
The Laser Locate™ waypoint projection feature works with compatible Garmin devices (sold separately) to show you exactly where the target was located when the shot or range was taken, so you can better track game or find bolts. In addition, the scope allows you to create custom bolt profiles with unique aim points for each setup, while its Target Lock and Steady Shot features assist with ranging and aiming performance to help improve accuracy.
The ACUslide, the talk of the 2020 crossbow market, features the company’s groundbreaking Auto-Brake Gear System, which allows for silent cocking and safe and controlled de-cocking of the crossbow. The Auto-Brake Gear System eliminates the potential of losing control which can lead to injury or costly bow damage during the de-cocking process. While de-cocking with the ACUslide, the user can remove their hand from the handle at any point, with no other action required – and the handle will stop in place.
The 7 ½-inch XTEND Adjustable Crank Handle reduces cocking effort to 5-pounds and stores securely into the butt-stock.
The Vapor features a patented reverse draw bow assembly that draws the string through the riser, creating an industry leading 17-inch power stroke. The increased power stroke generates more speed with less draw weight – creating a smoother, quieter shot. The elongated power stroke also keeps the arrow nock engaged with the string for an additional 4-inches compared to traditional crossbows, before release – this is a critical component in performance, as the longer the nock remains engaged with the string, the more accurate the arrow will be upon impact. In addition, this center-mounted riser provides superior balance, eliminating the “nose heavy” feel of traditional crossbows and making it easier to hold steady and increase accuracy.
The RX7-Cam™ system rotates an industry leading 404-degrees to produce speeds up to an unprecedented 470 feet-per-second. The crossbow’s revolutionary Vector-Quad™ cable technology utilizes four cables instead of the traditional two which eliminates cam lean and generates straight-nock travel leading to same-hole downrange accuracy.
The Vapor RS470 XERO features the company’s S1 trigger. This 2-stage, zero-creep design features an advanced roller-sear system that delivers a consistent crisp, 3.5-pound pull. The trigger is equipped with a DFI™ (Dry-Fire-Inhibitor) and is fitted with a nylon-filament arrow retention brush that improves arrow grip and alignment to reduce noise and vibration. An integrated string stop system is also included to further reduce noise and vibration.
The crossbow has a 20-inch -MICRO-TRAC™ fluted aluminum barrel that reduces the flight deck surface by an incredible 50%. The minimal string-to-barrel contact increases accuracy and provides string life in excess of 1,000 shots.
The barrel is fastened to the ultra-light, two-piece TECH-X™ stock that features multiple weight reducing cutouts, as well as a hollow pocket that houses the ACUslide cocking and de-cocking system. The stock also features an elevated cheek piece which provides the shooter with perfect eye level alignment for the XERO X1i Rangefinding Scope.
The Garmin Xero X1i rangefinding scope has magnification of 3.5X, ranges out to 500 Yards with angle compensation, and offers the ability to set the scope up for multiple custom arrow configurations. The scope features Laser Locate, which allows the shooter to mark where the shot was taken for more accurate tracking after the shot. Steady Aim and Aim Point level features let you know motion or canting may impact your shots point of impact.
Fully assembled, the crossbow weighs just 8-pounds (w/o accessories), measures only 31-inches (w/o stirrup) in length and shoots up to a supercharged 470 feet-per-second.

TRUETIMBER VSX: THE WORLD’S FOREMOST TECHNICAL CAMO SYSTEM
TrueTimber’s VSX was designed using our micro and macro schematics technology, making this pattern just as effective from the top of the highest mountain terrains to the wide-open prairies and southern woodland thickets. The strategic, non-directional shapes and texturization use lights and darks working together to break up the human outline at close and long distances. The colors are made up of natural grays, browns, and greens found across all outdoor environments and seasons, making this pattern extremely diverse and virtually invisible to any game you’re pursuing. Check out the BRAND NEW Cabela’s Instinct Hunting Clothing featuring the TrueTimber VSX pattern below.
The True Timber pattern VSX design has proven very functional to me in several hunts already. I’ve been in tree stands in Kentucky, ground blinds in central Texas as well as out in west Texas and what I’ve seen is this pattern blends in easily all over. I’m very impressed with the color schemes of grays, brown, green and how it diverse it is for any terrain and any game.
I judge my hunting clothing on several key points such as how durable it will be, how functional it is, how quiet it is and finally how comofortable it is. The Cabela’s Instinct lineup is one I’ve worn for many years basically since it’s inception and I’ve always found it to fit my needs regardless of it being 100 degrees or below 30 degrees when I’m in the field.
Ultimately you want your hunting clothing to perform the way it’s supposed to and the way it’s marketed to you so that at the moment of truth the last thing you’ve got to worry about is being cold, being noisy and being uncomfortable.

The Wolverine RMAX2 1000 is equipped with a hydraulic piston-assist dump bed, while the RMAX4 1000 offers industry-exclusive, simple-to-stow full-size rear seats, allowing for expanded cargo or passenger capacity when needed. Both beds feature rugged steel tie-down points to securely fasten payloads.
MAX COMFORT: Stout, New Chassis with Auto-Style Cab Comfort, Smooth Running Engine,
The Wolverine RMAX 1000 lineup’s interior design is reimagined to provide the most comfort features experienced in the cabin of a SxS, minimizing fatigue and maximizing fun on all-day rides. Vehicle mass is centralized with a low-mounted rear driveshaft for a serene and quiet-performing driveline, further silenced with robust spiral and helical gears. The smooth-running 999cc parallel twin is positioned in an inclined layout with a 270-degree cross-plane crankshaft and counter-balancer, while engine noise and vibration are kept to a minimum through its rubber-mounted system. The high-quality, aggressive-sounding exhaust is precisely tuned for all-day riding enjoyment, with the rigid high-volume air intake and accumulator aiding in added noise reduction for increased cabin comfort. A new steering rack and Yamaha’s proven speed- and torque-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) system has also been adopted for light-effort steering, balanced feedback, and precise steering-character to further reduce vibration and driver fatigue.
The Wolverine RMAX 1000 line delivers superior contact-to-ground feel with impressive suspension travel and geometry for supreme articulation. New FOX 2.0 QS3 shocks are mounted to wide-arc a-arms, allowing throughout any operating speed, high-quality damping and maximum ground clearance, measuring a class-leading 13.8-inches on the RMAX2 1000 and 13.4-inches on the RMAX4 1000. The RMAX4 1000 additionally offers an impressive 14.2-inches of front suspension travel with 13.3-inches in the rear, and the RMAX2 1000 reigns supreme, providing best-in-class suspension travel at 14.2-inches up front and a massive 16.9-inches in the rear. To tailor the suspension for different riding styles and situations, the QS3 shocks feature three positions, adjustable without the need for tools, set for relaxed driving, trail-riding, or aggressive sport-performance. For a premium experience in a wide variety of terrain, LE models feature FOX iQS shock technology, putting suspension damping setting adjustments in the cockpit, allowing drivers to choose preferred levels manually by toggling a three-way rocker switch on the dashboard. The three choices include Comfort, Medium, or Firm, and are controlled by a Bosch ECU and IP67-rated components – an industry-first on stock SxS – for Proven Off-Road reliability and performance in any terrain, wet or dry.
The all-new three-piece front doors allow for easy entrance and exit with an inner-steel structure, robust inner-door handles for smooth operation in even the harshest conditions, soft touchpoints, and prewiring for full Yamaha Genuine Accessory speaker integration. New seats provide a quality look and feel while new easy-to-adjust, six-position seatbelts offer increased comfort for all occupants. Fitment is further tailored with increased fore/aft adjustment in the driver’s seat compared to previous Wolverine models for added roominess and accommodation for taller drivers.
The cabin offers a luxurious, automotive-type design for premium comfort and style beyond the competitors’ hard plastic interiors. The Proven Off-Road Wolverine RMAX 1000 line boasts industry-exclusive soft touchpoints, including a rubber over-molded steering wheel with 17 degrees of tilt adjustment, an all-new soft-touch, quick-adjust passenger handhold, padded knee areas, and soft center-console lid. Confidence-inspiring controls have been integrated into the dash and center-console for a natural, automotive-feel, including a blue LED dash meter, sealed console and glove boxes, driver and passenger storage mats, an open-gate shifter, soft-touch parking brake lever, powered USB-port on Adventure Pro-equipped models, and two or six cupholders on the two- and four-seat configurations, respectively. XT-R and LE variations are also equipped with stylish cut-and-sew seats, a rearview center-mount mirror, color-matched interior, chrome inlays on the shifter and brake lever, all-new blue LED interior floor and center-console lighting, and all-new blue LED-backlit On-Command, Headlight, Winch, D-Mode, and iQS switches.
MAX CONFIDENCE: Proven Off-Road Durability, Reliability, and Superior Build-Quality
The Wolverine RMAX 1000 line’s next-generation styling has an imposing stance at 64-inches wide and sleek, yet aggressive design for an overall unstoppable look only furthered by the models’ best-in-class suspension travel, burly tires, and 86.7-inch wheelbase on the RMAX2 1000 or 90.2-inch wheelbase on the RMAX4 1000. Stealthy new front LED headlights and marker lights, along with head-turning color combinations, give the RMAX 1000 lineup a distinctive and advanced look above all others on the trail.
For maximum confidence, the RMAX 1000 line features fully-welded steel skid plates and a replaceable front plastic skid plate to tackle terrain without fear of damaging components in the most vital areas. For tight situations and added protection while traversing trail obstacles, the lineup comes standard with welded-on rear wheel protectors extending from the bottom of the frame to reduce obstacle contact with the rear tires. Solidifying owner confidence, all Yamaha SxS frames feature a two-stage coating process completed at the factory. First, an automotive-style, full-submersion e-coat is applied to ensure complete coverage, even inside the frame rails and tubes, followed by an exceptionally durable powder coat process.
New stealthy and advanced LED headlights give the Proven Off-Road Wolverine RMAX 1000 models a unique, sinister look and character while shining the ideal wide-beam pattern during off-road adventures. The 7.6-watt LED mono-focus low-beams constantly light up the trail, while the 15.2-watt reflector-type high-beams are for maximum illumination while driving in lowlight conditions. In the rear, the integrated LED taillights, brake lights, and class-exclusive reverse lights retain trail visibility and enhance lighting while backing up.
A robust front bumper comes standard on RMAX 1000 models and includes two welded-steel trailering tie-down points, an integrated winch plate, accessory add-on brush guard, and accessory pod light mounting brackets. XT-R and LE versions are also equipped with a factory-installed, heavy-duty WARN VRX 4,500-pound winch featuring IP68-rated waterproofing, all-metal construction for durability, a three-stage steel planetary gear train for smooth and reliable operation, and an easy-to-turn clutch dial. Making winch installation simpler on non-equipped models, Yamaha provided existing mounting points and prewiring to a dedicated, integrated switch located on the dash.
“From mountain trails to technical rock crawling, the all-new Wolverine RMAX 1000 line of Side-by-Sides excel, suiting a wide range of needs from a diverse community of drivers and families in a variety of environments,” Nessl said. “We’ve seen a significant increase in off-road vehicle sales this year with more people enjoying all forms of outdoor recreation, including powersports. About the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative
For more than a decade, the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative has led the Powersports industry in guaranteeing responsible access to our nation’s land for outdoor enthusiasts. Through this program, Yamaha has, directly and indirectly, supported thousands of miles of motorized recreation trails, maintained and rehabilitated riding and hunting areas, improved staging areas, supplied agricultural organizations with essential OHV safety education, built bridges over fish-bearing streams and partnered with local outdoor enthusiast communities across the country to improve access to public lands.
Trail development, restoration, and maintenance
Trail signage and map production
Staging area construction, renovation, and maintenance
Land stewardship, safety, and education
